Bevezetés
A vörösiszap a bauxitból kiinduló alumíniumgyártás mellékterméke. A bauxit alumíniumtartalmú ásványokból, valamint egyéb alkotókból, így vas- és szílícium-vegyületekből álló ásványi nyersanyag. A bauxit ún. Bayer technológia szerinti feldolgozásakor (ezt a technológiát alkalmazzák Ajkán) annak alumínium-tartalmát nátrium-hidroxiddal, erősen lúgos körülmények között választják el a többi alkotótól. A keletkező főtermék a timföld, ebből elektrolízissel fémalumíniumot gyártanak. A timföldgyártás mellékterméke egy magas vastartalmú, jellegzetes színű anyag, a vörösiszap. Mint arra neve is utal, iszapszerű, folyadékot és szárazanyagot egyaránt tartalmazó anyag. További jellemzője, hogy eredeti formájában könnyen folyik, és folyási tulajdonságai nedvességtartalmától és a rá ható nyomástól függően változnak. A vörösiszapot tározókban helyezik el világszerte, így Ajkán is.
